BluesQuake 2017 will feature three competitions:

     Novice Mix & Match
     Open Strictly
     Open Solo

Novice Mix & Match (Previously J&J)

The M&M competition is open to anyone who has never placed in a non-novice/non-amateur blues competition at any of the listed “Qualifying Events” (if you’ve placed at an event you think we may have omitted, please contact us).

Competitors sign up solo as a lead or a follow and will be paired with random contestants dancing the other role. You will be expected to maintain the same role throughout the competition.

Judging criteria is a combination of: Musicality, Quality of Movement, Partnership, Blues Aesthetic, and Showmanship.

Novice J&J competition prelims will be held on Saturday after the workshops at 6:00pm.
Novice J&J Finals will be held during the first band break of the Saturday dance, some time between 10:15 - 11:15pm.

Open Strictly

The Strictly is open to all. Competitors sign up and compete as a partnership. Expect fierceness and fun.

Open Solo

The solo competition is also open to all. The focus will be on solo movement, with optional riffing. Interaction, though optional, can be an opportunity for competitors to show off their ability to riff with other competitors effectively, but is in no way required.

Quality of Movement
Does what you’re doing look good? Is there purpose in the way you execute your movement? Is there variety in how you move in space?

Showmanship
Are you engaging to watch?

Partnership (M&M and Strictly)
Are you and your partner connecting well? Do you seem to have complementary ideas about what to do with the music?
